To Be a Great Leader, You Need the Right Mindset.

According to the Harvard Business Review, organizations around the world invest approximately $356 billion annually on leadership development efforts, yet over 75% of these organizations rated their leadership development programs as ineffective. What causes all of these organizations to have a low return on investment in their leadership development efforts?

One word…Mindset.

Simply put, mindsets are the driving force behind what leaders do and why they do it. When leadership development efforts ignore mindsets, they ignore how leaders see and interpret problems and opportunities.

After detailed research, Harvard Business Review identified four distinct mindsets that have been found to affect leaders’ ability to engage with others, navigate change more successfully, and perform in their leadership roles more effectively.

Growth Mindset

Having a growth mindset is foundational to leadership success because it supports the premise that people can learn, grow, and expand their skills.

When a leader has a growth mindset they can see setbacks as an opportunity to get back to the drawing board and try again. With a growth mindset, leaders are more likely to take on challenges, are open to feedback, adopt the more effective problem-solving strategies, and are more persistent in working towards their goals.

Learning Mindset

Leaders with a learning mindset are motivated to increase their knowledge and enjoy putting effort into mastering new things. These leaders make efforts to increase their competence, engage in deep-level learning strategies, and actively seek feedback. They are also persistent, adaptable, willing to cooperate, and tend to perform at a higher level.

Agile Mindset

Leaders with this mindset value openness and adaptability. An agile leader can take in and filter information and assimilate quickly. Agile leaders are resilient and innovative which allows them to not only anticipate change but actively seek or even create it themselves.

Promotion Mindset

Leaders with a promotion mindset are focused on winning and gains. A promotion mindset allows leaders to identify a specific goal and prioritize a system that will lead them to that goal. Research has found that those with this mindset think more positively, are more open to change, and are more likely to persist despite challenges and setbacks.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  1. What does leadership mean to you?
  2. Are you currently in a leadership position? Or do you plan to be in one soon?
  3. How would you define your mindset now?
  4. Are you open to feedback and critique?
  5. One of the biggest aspects to being a successful leader is to be coachable. Are you coachable?

Practical and Effective Techniques to Motivate Your Team

Do you know of any creative and unique ways to motivate your team? If not, you may find your results flatline.

Studies show people are the most productive when they are happy with their careers and when they are emotionally engaged in the company’s culture. Leading and motivating a team are two things that need to be done exceptionally well to continue seeing success and growth in your business.

If your team isn’t motivated, they aren’t going to remain with you for a long. If you have a team that is completely indifferent or uncaring about the work they are doing, they aren’t going to go above and beyond to ensure it’s done well. If you are a business leader, you need a cache of strategies you can use to effectively motivate your team.

If you are ready to learn more, and ensure your team is properly motivated, here are a few tips:

Listen to Your Team

This is especially important when it comes to roadblocks that may be keeping your team from working effectively . It’s a good idea to conduct regular team meetings or brainstorming sessions that allow you team to open up, express their concerns, and pitch some ideas. This shows them that you value them and take their concerns seriously. Remember, your team is a representation of you. This means any obstacles that hinder them from working effectively can have an impact on your business as a whole.

Reinforce Your Business’s Purpose and Core Values

It’s important that your team is  clear on why the company exists and that they understand its mission, vision, and core values.  They should also know what your purpose is, as their leader and mentor. If there isn’t a bigger picture behind what you and your business stands for besides making profits, it’s going to be challenging to motivate your team. You need them to believe in your business and to believe in you.

Show Respect

Regardless of their, seniority, working style or ranking are, it is important that you be respectful. If there is someone who perceives favoritism, this can be a catalyst for dysfunctional behavior and team breakdowns.

These are just a few ways to keep your team motivated and engaged that will work for you no matter which industry you are in. To hear my entire list, listen to “How To Retain A Team” on the Legacy Movement Podcast below!

3 Signs that Show It’s Time to Hire a Business Coach

Generating more income is something most people are passionate about. Taking a leap of faith and starting your own business can be scary. Instead of letting uncertainty and fear hold you back from your full potential, seize the moment and become your own boss.

The United States is home to over 30 million small businesses. Having success in the highly-competitive world of small business will not be easy. There may come a time when you feel like you are in over your head and need some assistance. This is when hiring an experienced business coach can come in handy.

Here are 3 signs that you should hire a business coach.

1. You Are Not Getting The Results You Expected

Being a successful business owner starts with setting realistic expectations for your new venture. Thinking you are going to take over the industry you are operating in with minimal work is a recipe for disaster. However, if you have owned a business for a few years and aren’t seeing results, working with a business coach may be a good idea.

Often times, a fresh perspective can help you see issues that need to be addressed. A competent business coach can help you with everything from increasing brand awareness to improving the return you receive on your investments.

2. You Are Overwhelmed

Being overwhelmed is never a good thing. Handling the day to day operation of a newly formed business is far easier than handling every aspect of a growing company. During periods of significant growth, you may find yourself overwhelmed at the work ahead of you. Finding a way to structure this work and properly delegate it can be easier said than done.

Instead of letting the feeling of being overwhelmed throw you off track, you need to work with a business coach. With their assistance, you can set up the infrastructure needed to facilitate growth. Trying to handle every aspect of running a business without this type of coaching is a bad idea. Allowing a business coach to weigh in on important decisions can help you avoid mistakes.

3. You Are Ready to Expand

The main goal most business owners have is attracting as many customers as possible. Expanding into new markets can be intimidating. However, if you properly plan the expansion process, you can avoid mistakes that could derail these efforts.

If you are unsure about how to plan this expansion process, working with a business coach is imperative. Business coaches are people who have achieved high levels of success in either the small business or corporate world. This means they are uniquely qualified to help you in your pursuit of market dominance.

Do Your Homework Before Choosing a Business Coach.

One of the main things you need to do before hiring a business coach is to research their background. Working with Alvin Darien II is a wise idea. He has the experience and drive needed to help you achieve your goals. Contact Alvin Darien II to find out more about the services he offers.

Leading from The Front

What is Leading from the front?

Leading from the front, also known as leading by example is the act of a true leader demonstrating your leadership by “going first”. Leading from the front is an example of practicing what you preach. It is not always about your numbers or personal achievements.

Why is leading from the front important?

When leading from the front, you are setting an example for your team, mentees, family, and more.

How often do you see “leaders” tell their followers to do things they wouldn’t do themselves, or give advice that they themselves would never follow? Now ask yourself, how successful that leader will be in the long run?

True leaders do not believe in asking their team to do anything they wouldn’t do themselves. Leading from the front is a great way to build trust and helps everyone become successful in the long run.

10 Most important areas to lead from the front:

  1. Family
Set a positive example for your family.
  2. Business Systems

Make sure your business systems are simple and efficient. Do not over complicate things.

  1. Integrity
Integrity is a key factor. Keep your word. Be on time. Be Honest. Be ethical.
  2. Event Management/Time Management
I always say, there is no such thing as “time management.” Treat everything you’re doing as an event.
  3. Work Ethics

Similar to integrity, conduct your business in an honest and ethical fashion as you lead others to do the same.
Be willing to put in a half-a-day’s work when necessary. (12 out of 24 hours)

  1. Financial Responsibility
    Manage your money responsibly.
  2. How You Take Care of Yourself
Leading from the front it not just how you conduct your business. Are you taking care of yourself in the process? From appearance to mental health. It’s important to take care of yourself in order to always put your best foot forward and lead the way.
  3. How You Handle Conflict

During conflict it is always important to listen. To handle any conflicts that arise you should remain calm and make sure your making decisions based on logic and not emotion.

7 Keys to Winning In Business

Being an athlete in high school was no easy feat. It required a lot of time, dedication, and consistency; Something I was willing to do to become the best version of myself. After college, I made the decision that I wanted to be a successful business owner, but how could I achieve this? When I came to the realization that running a successful business required the same dedication and consistency as being successful in football (or any sport for that matter), I knew I had the tools for success.

Here, I would like to share the 7 Keys I utilized to create a successful career and to win a “championship” in business.

1. Don’t Quit/ Remember Your Why

Running a business is not easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it. If you ever feel like things are getting tough and have even the slightest of giving up, remember your “Why.” Why did you start? And most importantly, what is your vision.

2. Show Up

Everything starts with commitment. Like in sports, you have to commit to practices in order to better yourself. In business, you must make a commitment to show up every day to work on your goals and improve yourself and your business. It is important to be committed to doing your best, even when you don’t feel like it.

3. Coaching

Having the right coach is everything. The coach must have a great track record of success, integrity, and a vision to win. Most importantly, they must have a system that can easily be followed.

4. Master the Basics

Mastering the basic is important in any industry. In basketball, before you can go out on the court, you need to master dribbling, lay-up, shooting and more.

In business, we must master the basics of communication, building relationships, and closing.

5. Synergy/Teamwork

Teamwork is everything. Your favorite football team wouldn’t make it to the Superbowl if everyone played for themselves. In order win, each player has a role, that when done properly, creates a smooth flowing system.  The same goes for your business. Everyone must be on the same page and working towards a common goal- Success.

6. Track Performance

Where performance is measured, performance improves.

How many calls did you make? How many presentations did you give?  What is your closing ratio? The average ratio is 10:3:1

10 prospects make an appointment.  3 of those people will keep their work.  1 person will close.

Everyone has different ratios however, so make sure you know your numbers and track your performance accordingly.

7. Keep Score

At the end of the fiscal year, we want to have profits and growth.

In order to track this, you must keep score, plan accordingly, and keep the following in mind:

If you want a good decade, you must have good years.

To have a good year, you must have a good quarter.

To have a good quarter, you must start with a good month.
To have a good month, you need to have a good week.

In order to have a good week, you must start with a good day.

And all of this starts with planning ahead.
